The Silicon Valley African Film Festival brought filmmakers and film lovers together at San Jose’s Historic Hoover Theatre for an opening-night celebration during its 17th annual edition. The festival’s guiding idea, “Africa Through the African Lens,” placed African perspectives at the center of a program spanning stories from 33 countries.

Founded and directed by Chike C. Nwoffiah, the festival paired screenings with opportunities for audiences to connect with the people behind the films. The opening film, AFROTŌPIA, was directed by David Mboussou, whose work was part of a wider celebration of African and diaspora filmmaking.

The October 9 gathering photographed here was part of the festival’s October 8–11 run, which featured 76 selected films from 33 countries, including 21 African nations. Narrative features, documentaries and animation brought different generations and perspectives into conversation.

A highlight was the festival’s Icon Award for Dr. Sona Jobarteh, the Gambian kora virtuoso and founder of The Gambia Academy. The honor recognized an artist whose work connects music, cultural preservation and education.

The celebration also welcomed Congressman Sam Liccardo, Assemblymember Ash Kalra and San Jose City Councilmember Rosemary Kamei. Their presence reflected the festival’s roots in the local community alongside its international reach.

The event was attended by several notable guests including filmmakers Solomon Ekhator, Ibinabo Fortune, David Akwara, Boubecrine Ibrahim El Mamy, Zeyna Seyni Diop, Ola “Naked” Jegede, Paluo Idalecio and Kelvin Kagambo.
