Larry Miller hosted a celebration to launch JUMP, his legacy initiative to catalyze first and second chances for justice impacted talent, in partnership with The Just Trust.

JUMP (Justice and Upward Mobility Project) – a new project of The Just Trust – aims to leverage the power and influence of sports and entertainment to unlock access to education, employment, and economic mobility for youth and adults impacted by the justice system and seeking a first or second chance.

Inspired by Larry Miller’s powerful story of redemption and success, JUMP seeks
to drive impact through four strategic pillars:

  1. Education and Employment: Create education and workforce development programs that catalyze pathways to livable wage employment and economic mobility for youth and adults who suffer from justice system involvement. This includes a focus on personal leadership development and partnerships with employers in the sports, entertainment and business sectors.
  2. Advocacy and Policy: Work with local, state, and federal policy makers to advance legislation that reduces collateral consequences and supports education, workforce development, and public/private partnerships that support inclusive hiring practices and reduce barriers to employment as a result of an arrest history.
  3. Media and Narrative: Develop film, media and storytelling campaigns that change public perception and reshape societal narratives around the perceived scarlet letter of living with arrest records and corresponding challenges.
  4. Coalition Building: Build local coalitions that mobilize educational institutions, community based organizations, local government, and businesses to foster first and second chance employment ecosystems.

Through this approach, in addition to democratizing opportunity – they’re transforming how society views talent, justice, and human potential.

Passing of the Baton – Lateefah Simon

Congresswoman Lateefah Simon to join former Congresswoman Barbara Lee to co-present the Oakland Humanitarian Award at In the Name of Love

This Saturday Congresswoman Barbara Lee will be sharing the tradition of presenting the Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award with Congresswoman Lateefah Simon.

Lateefah Simon embodies Oakland’s heart and soul. From her youth, she’s championed justice, equity, and opportunity for all, particularly for the marginalized and forgotten. She has carried forward the torch lit by Congresswoman Lee, blazing her own path while always rooted in the values of respect, service, and community.

These two remarkable women remind us of Dr. King’s words: “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.” Together, they represent what’s possible when leadership is guided by love and a deep commitment to justice.

This Saturday they will be honoring someone who shares those values.

For nearly two decades, Bay Area leader and activist Andrew Park has been leading Oakland on faith with his sights to the future. Trybe’s youth centered mission focuses not just on serving young people, but serving their families. By reaching the whole family unit, the household is what will provide the stability and sustainability needed to transform communities.

“If you have a child who deserves support, they should get it from everyone, and you should see that child as a blessing.”  – Congresswoman Lateefah Simon

This award recognizes a local hero, nominated to Living Jazz by the City of Oakland Department of Violence Prevention. This year Andrew Park is being honored for his tireless dedication to bringing violence interruption, conflict mediation support, and healing services to neighborhoods in Central Oakland.

In the Name of Love is a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King as well as a spectacular musical tribute to the Queen of Soul – Aretha Franklin

Don’t miss this inspiring event that uplifts the spirit of Dr. King’s dream and highlights the power of music and community.
