Martin Luther is a soul singer with an un-compromised vision who, via his unique brand of rebel soul music, uses his 2nd tenor voice to captivate audiences from small intimate night clubs, to the big screen. Recognized as one of San Francisco Bay Area’s premiere talents, he has always presented a distinct blend of jazz funk fusion and more recently served as lead vocalist for the SFJazz Collective. At its center is Meklit’s voice, which soars and whispers, intoning strength and devotion in multiple languages. From songs of longing and love to children’s riddles and original compositions, Meklit traverses expansive sonic ground that offers just a glimpse at the infinite complexity of Ethiopian culture. Featuring guest appearances by harpist Brandee Younger and flutist Camille Thurman and recorded at San Francisco’s Women’s Audio Mission.

Musician and visual artist Mark Montgomery French is an award-winning film composer with the group Spiky Blimp, host of the podcast “All Your Favorite Music is (Probably)…”, and Director of Audio Visual at Glide Memorial Church. In June 2025, he released his ambient protest album Thy Navel is a Goblet That Does Not Lack for Wine. He’s also a music historian noted for his talks All Your Favorite Music is (Probably) Black, Unsung Women of Music, and Black Country Before Beyoncé. He was formerly the co-leader of the ’90s progressive funk band Endangered Species.

In the early ’90s, The Pharcyde emerged with a unique style in the gangsta rap-dominated West-Coast scene, embracing a self-deprecating and quirky approach that set them apart. Their debut, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, flipped hip-hop conventions on their head, with hits like “Oh Shit,” “Otha Fish,” and “Passing Me By,” leading it to achieve platinum status and comparisons to De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. Their second album, Labcabincalifornia, showcased their forward-thinking vision by featuring the young J Dilla and Spike Jonze’s direction for the “Drop” video. For over 45 years, this unique vocal/guitar duo has cast its passionate musical spell worldwide, capturing the hearts of lovers, the respect of jazz buffs and the jaw-dropping awe of guitarists and singers. They were married in 1981, and their recording career took off with 1988’s groundbreaking Tears of Joy. Now, 13 albums later, they have toured the world incessantly as a duo, appearing at times alongside Miles Davis, Count Basie, George Benson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and many others. They have long been regarded by musicians and critics as the standard for an improvising musical duo. Their music spans Duke Ellington, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix–rock, pop, jazz, gospel, blues, folk, world and classical–classics and originals, but inevitably finally just sounds like Tuck & Patti. Transcending categorization, Tuck & Patti are known for individual virtuosity in service of the greater goal of expressing love, hope and gratitude through music.

An improvisational dialogue between piano, sarod, and tabla. This project began with a long-standing friendship and creative curiosity between Vijay Iyer and Alam Khan, both of whom had worked independently with tabla player Nitin Mitta. When the three gathered in California for a two-day session, it unfolded as an unplanned yet deeply connected musical conversation. Born of spontaneity and mutual respect, this collaboration lives in the moment. Drawing from their shared fluency in improvisation, the trio recorded a series of intimate, exploratory pieces that became the foundation for their upcoming EP. These recordings reflect the spirit of listening and discovery that guided their first encounter.

Season’s Greetings Singalong with Zoe Ellis

Berkeley native Zoe Ellis co-founded the Freight Singers Community Chorus with Bryan Dyer, teaches singing for all levels at The Freight, and is a regular contributor to The Freight’s Golden State of Song arts immersion program. For the first time ever, she’ll lead a Season’s Greeting Singalong to welcome holiday cheer into our showroom! During this 75 minute interactive singalong, Zoe will lead the audience through songs to get you into the season: Christmas Carols, non-denominational holiday songs, and more. The whole family is welcome to attend!

Raised in Woodbridge, Virginia, Williams grew up surrounded by music. Please join us this summer at The Freight, one of Berkeley’s oldest and most beloved music venues, for a special musical story time series with the Berkeley Public Library’s Story Time Band! These FREE events will occur on second Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning on Thursday, June 12. Each session will feature live music, movement activities, and read-aloud stories for children ages 2-7. The Moth StorySLAM – Family Matters

Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories told live and without notes. Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience. The Moth was founded by the novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate in New York the feeling of sultry summer evenings in his native Georgia, when moths were attracted to the light on the porch where he and his friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales.
