George Balanchine’s Jewels is an abstract three-part masterpiece inspired by the brilliance and character of precious stones. Emeralds reflects the elegance of French Romantic ballet, Rubies flashes with wit, speed and a distinctly American jazz energy, and Diamonds summons the grandeur of Imperial Russia.

The score moves from Gabriel Fauré to Igor Stravinsky and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, illuminating the different worlds of each ballet. Karinska’s jewel-toned costumes and Ronald Bates’ lighting unite the triptych into a dazzling celebration of ballet’s history, musicality and enduring theatrical splendor.
