SFJAZZ Hotplate: Tiffany Austin Sings Carmen McRae’s Carmen Sings Monk
Bay Area vocalist Tiffany Austin honors Thelonious Monk with a program based on Carmen McRae’s 1990 album Carmen Sings Monk. The project pairs Monk’s compositions with lyrics by writers including Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln, Mike Ferro and Sally Swisher.
Austin is an L.A. native who spent five years performing in Japan before moving to the East Bay. While studying at UC Berkeley, she received a full scholarship to the California Jazz Conservatory.
Carmen Sings Monk was recorded live at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall in 1988 and includes vocal versions of Monk works such as “Ruby, My Dear” and “Rhythm-A-Ning.”
