Vocalist, composer, actor and playwright Somi Kakoma returns to SFJAZZ with music shaped by jazz, African musical traditions and themes of identity and social experience.
Born into a Rwandan and Ugandan family and raised partly in Zambia, Somi was mentored by South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela. Her latest album, What Does It Take To Bloom?, is a personal song cycle about becoming and returning home.
