The energy was high in City Hall – North Light Court as the third annual Pathways to Parity economic rights summit came to a close with a fun and festive reception on Friday, October 6, 2023.  Civic and community leaders, economic scholars, and friends gathered to celebrate the closing of the innovative, multi-site, two-day convening to create transformational economic impacts for all.  Dr. Sheryl Davis, Executive Director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission gave remarks, and a special performance by Bay Area hip hop’s own Suga-T kept things going as attendees danced into the evening.

Influencers and industry were treated to an exclusive & private sneak preview of Hulu’s New Series “The Conversation Project,” originated by veteran sportswriter Marc J. Spears, currently of ESPN’s Andscape, and renowned chef David Lawrence at Karibu Wine Lounge in Alameda.

Background
America has been hampered by racism for centuries, with even incremental progress meeting with varying degrees of resistance. Here we are in the 21st century and even in sports, a supposed meritocracy, this social illness remains stubborn.

Those on the vanguard continue to experiment with creative ideas to nudge us closer to the yet undelivered promise of true equality.

Veteran sportswriter Marc J. Spears, currently of ESPN’s Andscape, and renowned chef David Lawrence are breaking new ground in this regard. They want to expose everyone – even those who are reluctant – to take a few minutes eavesdropping into the Black experience.

[Marc Spears] So we created a TV show concept. I wrote a treatment; the treatment became a pilot in which had Terrence Mann from the (Los Angeles) Clippers. We brought him to a vineyard in Napa called Charles Krug. I interviewed him in the winery. And in amongst the vineyards, Chef made a Caribbean meal because he has Caribbean ties. Last Thursday, September 28 more than 125 arts patrons attended the opening reception of Justin Yoon’s, Midnight Movie at Jonathan Carver Moore. This was Yoon’s debut exhibition in San Francisco. Curators from the Asian Art Museum, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Bay Area journalists and art enthusiasts gathered at the Transgender District’s newest contemporary art gallery celebrating vibrant and bright paintings referencing queer campy movies. Moore’s gallery is quickly becoming a central hub for the San Francisco art scene. On September 23rd, government, community, and corporate leaders gathered at Urban League of Greater San Francisco Bay Area’s 2nd Annual Empowerment Awards and Garden Soiree at the Oakland Museum of California. Attendees at this 2nd Annual Gala included State Treasurer Fiona Ma, California State Superintendent Tony Thurman, California Legislative Black Caucus Leader Lori Wilson, and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, all gathered to celebrate and support Urban League Bay Area in creating a pathway of Economic Empowerment for All.

Urban League of Greater San Francisco Bay Area, led by President Kenneth E. Maxey II, works throughout the nine Bay Area counties to ensure African Americans have access to a better future. Their programs range from job fairs and mentoring, leadership and technology training for youth, government leadership fellowships, uniting Bay Area communities to stop hate, celebrating community leaders, to ensuring the communities we serve have access to financial and health wellness.

Video | The story behind the legendary Black Panther Party’s revolutionary newspaper, art

The Black Panther Party celebrated its 55th anniversary in October and ABC7 sat down with the members who put the newspapers together.

Emory Douglas’ bright, smile draws you in, and so does his art. Douglas is the former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party.

“As a youngster, at my age, how could I build a Ministry of Culture?” said the 78-year-old.

Led by Douglas, the group of artists, Gayle “Assali” Dickson, Malik Edwards, Tarika Lewis and a few others, created and printed the Panther’s newspaper and the caption-filled art that went inside, and on the front and back pages. Together, they solidified a cultural movement. More…
