Sherri Shepherd was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Sherri started her stand-up career in 1990 while working in Beverly Hills as a legal secretary. In 1995, she took the big plunge, stepped out on faith, and quit her secretarial job. 12 days later she booked her first series as a regular on WB’s Cleghorne. It lasted only a season; and since unemployment didn’t pay the bills but typing did, Sherri had to go back to the law firm for the next three years. She is best-known for her role as Ramona on ABC’s Less Than Perfect. Not leaving her stand-up roots, Sherri still performs regularly at the Comedy Store, the Laugh Factory and the Improv.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Becky Robinson is an LA-based comedian, writer, actor, and voice-over star that has gone from viral sensation to a sold-out theater act.
You may also know her as the “Entitled Housewife”, the outspoken viral golf character Becky created who co-starred in the two virtual comedy variety specials she self-produced to help spread laughter during the yearlong pandemic. MoAD & Gilead Sciences present an afternoon of film, discussion and gathering to call attention to the too often ignored subject of breast cancer among Black women. While Black women contract the disease at the same rate, they are 40% more likely to die from the disease than white women.
How can storytelling and science come together to erase that disparity? We begin the day with the award-winning film ALBANY ROAD starring Lynn Whitfield in what critics have called “A delightful film that will warm your heart and touch your soul.” The screening will be followed by a discussion with actor Lynn Whitfield, filmmakers Michael and Christine Swanson, and Dr. Kim Rhoads, Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and co-founder of Umoja Health. The conversation will be moderated by Zhonnet Harper, Public Health Commissioner and Breast Cancer Navigator.

One of soft rock’s most iconic and enduring duos, Air Supply has been captivating audiences around the world for over four decades. Formed in 1975 when British-born singer-songwriter Graham Russell met powerhouse Australian vocalist Russell Hitchcock during a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, the pair discovered an instant musical chemistry. On Friday, October 24, American Conservatory Theater hosted its Annual Gala at the St. Joseph’s Arts Society—igniting the night in celebration of theater! And what a sensational night it was—emceed by the Bay Area’s own Ryan Nicole Austin and featuring a roof-raising and soul-stirring performance by Grammy nominee Quentin Earl Darrington, star of A.C.T.’s Hippest Trip—The Soul Train Musical, with a dance party courtesy of Spellbound DJ! The event was a smashing success, raising over $620,000 to date to support all of A.C.T.’s mission-driven programming.

Bluesadelix are veterans of numerous rock, blues and folk bands from Los Angeles and San Francisco in the 1980s and 1990s, Bluesadelix was formed in 2019, focused on performing their own brand of psychedelic blues rock, relying on the songwriting talents of Robert Hill and Mark Ungar. The five members – two drummers, bass, guitar and keyboards – infuse many different styles into infectious rhythms and memorable melodies. You’ll hear elements of 60s British Blues, improvisational psychedelic San Francisco jam bands, and the power of hard rock, tipping their hats to such bands as Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Cream and Steve Miller.

This wildly popular, family-friendly experience features hundreds of ALL new, larger-than-life animal lanterns throughout the Zoo. Each lantern tells the story of the ongoing journey of wildlife, the importance of every species on our planet, and Oakland Zoo’s commitment to conservation.
This year’s experience includes new themes — explore the future of Oakland, learn about coexisting with wildlife, swim through the reef to see colorful underwater creatures, go on a safari through the savanna to spot iconic African animals, meet some interesting bugs that are all around us, and end the night by taking the train through the reptile world.
The Oakland Día de los Muertos Festival is a free, outdoor festival that brings over 100,000 people to the vibrant, culturally-rich Fruitvale neighborhood to enjoy world-class live music, family-friendly games, rides and activities, traditional Latin American artisans, and the stunning altar artistic installations created by community members paying homage to los Muertos. The Día de los Muertos Festival was inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress by Congresswoman Barbara Lee as a “Local Legacy.”
Inspired by the quilts in Routed West, members of Dimensions Dance Theater use rhythm, movement, and verse to piece together their family stories of journeying to California during the last wave of the Great Migration.
Even-mannered Judge Kenneth Turner presides over the local juvenile court in Memphis, Tennessee, in this exploration of troubled youth confronted by American justice. That particular brand of justice is often dispensed via backroom dealmaking, mediated by a formula of religious and psychological prescription. Judge Turner gets the most screen time, but the stars here are the children, adolescents, and parents, as the weight of the state bears down upon them. “They’re trapped by everything. Frederick Wiseman’s open-eyed approach to the stories of their lives is perhaps motivated less by reforming zeal than by his own sense of the mystery of those lives” (Pauline Kael, New Yorker).

At the age of 83, Jesse Jackson has a long career behind him as one of the most influential Black activists of the past century. As a civil rights leader, activist, shadow senator, presidential candidate, and ordained Baptist minister, he has been at the center of the public eye and a thorn in his opponents’ sides. Now CNN anchor and author Abby Phillip comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to share the story of Jackson, focusing on his presidential campaigns of 1984 and 1988. In both campaigns, he was initially viewed as a fringe candidate yet went on to surprisingly strong finishes—third place in 1984 and runner-up to nominee Michael Dukakis in 1988.
PCO’s annual traditional and uplifting presentation of part I and favorites from parts II and III, such as “Why do Nations Rage?” “The Trumpet Shall Sound”, and the cumulating final transcending “Amen” chorus.
