Described as “the best of us all” by no less an authority than Cuban piano giant Chucho Valdés, pianist and SFJAZZ Collective member Edward Simon returns to the intimate environs of Joe Henderson Lab as part of a remarkable trio featuring fellow greats Scott Colley and Brian Blade, performing music from their new co-led release, Three Visitors.

A native of Punta Cardón, Venezuela, Simon moved to New York in 1989 and worked extensively as part of Bobby Watson’s Horizon and the Terence Blanchard Group while doing sideman work with artists including Greg Osby, Bobby Hutcherson, Paquito D’Rivera and Herbie Mann. A Guggenheim fellow, he joined the SFJAZZ Collective in 2010.

The Bamako-born husband and wife met at while students at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind and found a shared interest in music and performing. After gaining international fame for reviving the classic sound of Cuban son, tres master Juan de Marcos turned the Afro-Cuban All Stars into a sensational showcase for Cuba’s most prodigious young musicians.

While long revered in Latin America and Europe as a founding member of Cuba’s great son revival band Sierra Maestra, de Marcos first gained notice in the US as founder of the Buena Vista Social Club. It was de Marcos who assembled Ibrahim Ferrer, Eliades Ochoa, Ruben Gonzalez and the rest of the crew for Ry Cooder when he came to Havana looking for illustrious old timers. But de Marcos is just as interested in promoting Cuba’s brilliant young musicians as in highlighting Cuba’s senior talent.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Albright was already an accomplished saxophonist by the time he enrolled at the University of Redlands, but he switched to bass after he saw Louis Johnson in concert. A few months after graduating from college, he joined jazz pianist/R&B singer Patrice Rushen, who was in the process of forming her own band. Later, when the bassist left in the middle of a tour, Albright replaced him and finished the tour on bass guitar. Playing both sax and bass, he became the consummate session and touring musician in the 80s, working with everyone from Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Jr., Atlantic Starr, The Temptations and Maurice White to Les McCann, Teena Marie, the Winans and Whitney Houston.

Bay Area arts supporters came together on October 23rd for Root Division’s 24th Annual Benefit Art Auction at the organization’s headquarters. The event featured Bay Area and internationally renowned artists, including Enrique Chagoya, Binh Danh, Kota Ezawa, Todd Hido, Adia Millett, Wanxin Zhang, Lava Thomas, and more than 160 talented artists. The evening also honored Root Division alum Cathy Lu, 2022 SFMOMA SECA Art Award winner.

Root Division was proud to team up with incredible gallery partners such as Anglim/Trimble, Arion Press, Jessica Silverman Gallery, Catharine Clark Gallery, Haines Gallery, Rena Bransten Gallery, and Jack Fischer Gallery. ​ Proceeds raised at Art Auction help Root Division support SF artists and provide free art education for 800 local youth, as well as studios, fellowships, and community programming.

Day of the Dead Celebration

The San Mateo County Historical Association will join the Casa Círculo Cultural to present a “Day of the Dead” event, observing this traditional Mexican celebration, on Sunday, November 2.

In front of the museum, Courthouse Square will be decorated with sugar skulls, marigolds, and lights. Dancers, artists, and musicians will perform. The museum will host free children’s crafts in the Rotunda and Festival of the Altars will be in Courtroom A and the Atkinson Room.
