BIG IDEAS, BIG PUMPKINS AND NEO-SOUL
Monday’s Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off turns Half Moon Bay’s Main Street into a heavyweight arena from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The enormous finalists compete for $9 per pound and a $30,000 world-record prize package; the champion stays in town for the weekend festival.
On Tuesday, Michael Pollan and neuroscientist Christof Koch meet at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall at 7:30 p.m. for a conversation about consciousness, psychedelics and what science still cannot explain. Tickets start at $25. Wednesday brings novelist and essayist Zadie Smith to the Sydney Goldstein Theater at 7:30 p.m., in conversation with “Talk Easy” host Sam Fragoso about fiction, culture and her recent essay collection “Dead and Alive.”
On Thursday and Friday, Musiq Soulchild ● finishes his Yoshi’s run with two Oakland shows nightly at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. The neo-soul favorite’s remaining tickets start at $75.
ART, DESIGN AND STORIES IN MOTION
The San Francisco Fall Show opens to the public Thursday and runs through Sunday at Fort Mason. Its “Métallique Chic” theme puts gilding, silver, chrome and other metalwork in dialogue across art, antiques, jewelry and designer vignettes. The ticketed opening-night gala is Wednesday.
Thursday also marks the Black Panther Party’s 60th anniversary ● at Oakland’s Main Library, with a free 5–7:30 p.m. program honoring rank-and-file members.
Friday’s South Bay counterpoint is the Irving Flores Afro-Cuban Jazz Trio ● at San Jose Jazz’s intimate Break Room. The 8 p.m. show costs $27, including fees.
Sunday at the Oakland Museum of California, “Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange” turns the photographer’s archive into an immersive hour of theater, written by poet Tess Taylor and directed by Ciera Eis. Performances are at 1 and 3 p.m.; the $10 ticket includes museum admission.
Sunday also brings Judy Collins’ “Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: The Farewell Tour” to Zellerbach Hall at 3 p.m.—a touring milestone, though not a final musical bow.
WEEKEND STREETS, STAGES AND COASTAL COLOR
Saturday’s biggest R&B bill lands at Robin Williams Meadow in Golden Gate Park: T-Pain, Ari Lennox and DJs LadyRyan, Shellheart and bbcarolz ● take over from 1 p.m. The all-ages outdoor concert is ticketed, so secure entry before heading to the park.
Friday and Saturday evenings at Alameda Point, The Soiled Dove pairs a three-course dinner with circus, cabaret and original music beneath the Big Top, with Joan Baez appearing as a featured performer.
Also Saturday, Dimensions Dance Theater premieres “Power Memory Freedom Joy” ●, connecting the women of Guinea and the Black Panther Party through dance, at Oakland’s Valley Center for the Arts.
Across town, the free Brava! Block Party fills 24th Street on Saturday afternoon, celebrating 40 years of Brava, 30 years of community ownership and the theater building’s centennial with live performances, films and art activations. Down the coast, the free Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival runs 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with the Great Pumpkin Parade at noon Saturday.
The South Bay closes Saturday on two strong notes: Berkeley-raised saxophonist Kazemde George ● blends bebop, rumba, bossa nova and hip-hop at the SJZ Break Room at 8 p.m. ($27), while Nelly ● brings his crossover catalog to the Mountain Winery in Saratoga at 7:30 p.m.
On the radar: Doja Cat with Latto at Chase Center on Oct. 19, and Angela Davis at Zellerbach Hall on Oct. 28. Browse more picks on BAR’s Bay Area Events Calendar.
