Stories worth gathering for
Oakland’s free Judy Juanita & Benjamin Bowser author program (● Oct. 8, 6–7:30 p.m.) brings Black experience into conversation at the Main Library; register ahead. Onstage, The Brothers Size (● previews Oct. 6–8; opens Oct. 9) explores brotherhood at San Francisco’s Theatre 33, with $15 previews. The Fillmore’s Black history gets a musical telling in Every Saturday Night (● opens Oct. 10) at the Strand.
There’s a last chance for Berkeley Rep’s The Cook (● through Oct. 11; Thursday–Saturday tickets remain, but Sunday’s finale is sold out), which views revolution through a Cuban household. Smuin’s French Kiss (Oct. 9–10 this week) brings a My’Kal Stromile premiere to Cowell Theater. Farther south, TheatreWorks’ Dracula (Oct. 7–Nov. 1) opens at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts; Thursday’s free 6:15 p.m. lobby talk goes behind the scenes. Teatro Visión’s Alebrijes (Oct. 8–10 this week) turns Pedro Linares’ folk-art legacy into family theater at San Jose’s Mexican Heritage Plaza, in Spanish with English and Spanish captions and choose-your-price tickets.

The Silicon Valley African Film Festival (● Oct. 8–11) makes San Jose’s Historic Hoover Theater a meeting place for African cinema and filmmakers. Mill Valley Film Festival (through Oct. 11) reaches its final weekend across Marin and Berkeley, with $20 standard tickets. At the Roxie, 3rd i’s South Asian Film Festival (Oct. 9–11) opens with a tribute to director Avie Luthra. At Brava Theater, Other Minds Festival 30 (Oct. 8–11; $23–$66 sliding scale) marks three decades of experimental music with world premieres and cross-cultural programs. Newly opened RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me (Oct. 3–Feb. 7, 2027) connects Korean and international art; budget for the $10 weekday exhibition surcharge.
Soul, close up
Yoshi’s Oakland offers two routes into R&B: Will Downing (● Oct. 7–8; $79–$129) for a midweek night of sophisticated soul, and Musiq Soulchild (● Oct. 9–11 this week) for neo-soul; his early Saturday show is sold out. At SFJAZZ, Tiffany Austin (● Oct. 8–9; $29) approaches Monk through Carmen McRae’s vocals, while Marcus Shelby New Orchestra (● Oct. 10) celebrates Monk’s birthday in orchestral form. Sunday brings TLC, Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue (● Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m.) to Concord’s Toyota Pavilion for a reunion of R&B and hip-hop trailblazers. For a smaller-room discovery, Mara Hruby (● Oct. 10; $27) brings jazz and soul to San Jose Jazz’s Break Room.
Public spaces, shared culture
Berkeley Central Library’s free John Henry Sound System listening session (● Oct. 6, 3–5 p.m.) brings Black musical history into the stacks. Oakland Style (Oct. 7–11) spotlights local fashion and art; Thursday’s runway is at the Atrium at Uptown Station, with $25 standing-room tickets. Fleet Week (Oct. 4–12) offers free ship tours Wednesday–Thursday and Saturday–Sunday at Piers 27 and 35, plus Friday–Sunday air shows, subject to weather and schedule changes.
Pleasanton’s 626 Night Market (Oct. 9–11, 3–11 p.m.; $6 plus $15 parking) fills the Alameda County Fairgrounds with Asian-inspired street food, makers and live performances. ArtWalk Livermore (Oct. 10, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; free) turns downtown into an open-air gallery for its 25th anniversary, with 200-plus artists, new chalk art and the Great Elephant Migration sculpture opening. Other free Saturday outings: Paseo Artístico’s anniversary block party (Oct. 10, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.) brings murals, music and poetry to Harrison between 23rd and 24th; San Jose’s Pumpkins in the Park (Oct. 10, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.) marks 30 years with family activities at Discovery Meadow; and Palo Alto Rocks! (Oct. 10, 4–6 p.m.) launches the museum’s opening series at Heritage Park with Sheryl B and her Stellar 5, plus Past Curfew.
